A Langley Air Force Base sergeant learns that giving to war-torn children
can be its own reward.
Master Sgt. Edgardo Onas hands out beans and bullets to squads of military
police who accompany convoys from Bagram Air Base in the high desert of
eastern Afghanistan...
Then Onas, 37, went out with a convoy a week ago, 45 minutes to the Afghan
village of Kharoti. He volunteered. He had to. The mission was to take
nearly 63,000 pounds of clothes, toys and school supplies to children ages
5 to 8, and Onas is a sucker for kids...
"I'm a member of the Peninsula Junior Chamber of Commerce,"
he says. "It's something we do all the time."
In that, Swee Hart, also a Jaycee, understands. Like many in the
organization, Hart, who works at the Virginia Air and Space Museum, has
gotten e-mail from Onas.

War of
the Worlds Fundraiser surpasses $2,500 goal.
On Saturday, July 2nd, the chapter hosted its 5th
annual Movie Fundraiser at the newly opened Cinema Café in Hampton. The
event, typically one of the most enjoyable and well attended projects of
the year, pulled in record numbers. Following a successful 2004 Spiderman
event that raised approximately $1,700, this years committee set its
sights high with a goal of $2,500 with $1,500 hopefully coming from
sponsors. In the end, $1,437 was raised from sponsorship while over 200
tickets were sold to the public. Final numbers are still being evaluated,
but it should be close to $2,900. The Apprentice School chapter had a big
impact this year as well. In a partnership that also raised funds to Camp
Va Jaycee in their name, the Apprentice Jaycee members obtained $200 in
sponsorship and sold 41 tickets.
A big thanks to Cinema Café for not only providing a great venue and
deal for this event, but for saving the project which almost didn’t
happen after quotes from AMC and Regal. The staff was friendly and the
theatre was first class. Many other sponsors participated this year as
listed below, but two sponsors in particular were a big hit. Ledo’s
Pizza who provided 22 breakfast pizzas, and Port City Java who provided
the coffee.
Old Point Bank continued its strong support by not only staying on as
the events title sponsor, but also had three of its employees (Cathy
Brown, Veronica Kmetz, and Ivelisse Lopez) serve on this years’
committee. While the customary list of prizes was awarded after the movie,
it was one prize that caught everyone’s attention. A two night weekends
stay including breakfast and dinner courtesy of the new Embassy Suites
Hotel in Hampton.
While some liked the movie and some may not have, all were happy with
the event. Needless to say, thanks to those who attended, sponsored,
contributed prizes, and the committee who organized the event, many kids
will now be happy when the money raised sends them off for a week at Camp
Virginia Jaycee.
